Cambodia: Kingdom of Wonder (Phnom Penh)

April 11 - 17 '09

2nd leg of my southeast asia tour

this is where we stayed the longest. a total of 5 days!
i was still sick all through out the trip. medyo gumaling lang nung last day.haay.

i wanna share some tips when traveling to phnom penh :)

ACCOMMODATION

we stayed at my dad's apartment the whole time we were there. for short time stay, i think it is better to stay in a hotel. though i don't have any idea how much it cost. i haven't seen guesthouses around the area puro apartment lang.

GETTING AROUND

we traveled around phnom penh through riding a tuktuk. since it was khmer new year, medyo ripped off sila. they were charging us 3$ from the apartment to russian market.my dad said usually 1 - 2$ lang daw dapat. from the apartment to Genocide Museum, we paid 2$ (one way). better haggle first before riding their tuktuk. some also offer riding their motorcycle.im not sure how much though.

TOURIST SPOTS

i think ok na ang 2 whole days to explore phnom penh.for tourist spots we were able to visit...

russian market - best place to buy souvenirs
royale palace and silver pagoda - we paid 6$/each to explore the area. though we don't have a tour guide, we managed to tour the area. ok na 1 - 1 1/2 hours to explore the area.
tul sleung genocide museum - i think it is 3$/each. this is where phnom penh is known for.it was used to be a school turned into prison and torture site of the khmer rouge.
independence monument - walking distance from my dad's apartment.hehe.monument lang.

CURRENCY

they use US dollars for almost everything.if your change is less than 1$,they give REAL as change.
1$ = 40000 - 42000 real

SHOPPING and more

for souvenirs, best to buy in russian market.you can also buy surplus items in russian market.parang greenhills na overruns. don't forget to haggle!
for shopping mall/centers, we went to Sovanna shopping mall and Sorya shopping mall.they look like st.francis square shopping center. DVDs were everwhere.the best part, hard to find dvds were all over the place.scary lang bumili kasi pirated.hahaha.there were brands much cheaper there than here in philppines like REVLON, ELLE LUGGAGE, SAMSONITE LUGGAGE, IPANEMA, OLAY, NIVEA and many more.may mga tiangge din inside the mall, parang tutuban mall yung hitsura ng mga nagbebenta ng shoes and clothes.pwede din maghaggle.

since i don't have a laptop with me,i go to their internet shop to check emails and internet accounts.super bagal ng ibang shops. for internet,1 hour = 1$.

COMMUNICATION

most of khmer people can understand english. though there were some instances that you have to use gestures especially sa mga small stores and pointing to map sa mga tuktuk drivers.

FOOD

lucky seven is their version of jollibee. nothing beats chicken joy of jollibbe.hahaha. in lucky seven meals cost 2-4$.
pho 24 - vietnamese restaurant infront of the apartment.food is so -so
VIP restaurant - thai food. didn't enjoy it that much. may 50% discount si daddy. around 7$ (discounted already) yung meals namin.
japanese restaurant which i forgot the name - super expensive.bento box meal costs 8$.lasang tokyo tokyo.haha.
pizza company - lasang pizza hut.medyo expensive din.

check out our pictures from the trip :)
